Long-time district bus driver Beth Cheney was recognized by the Oak Grove Fire Department on April 2 for her assistance in life-saving measures of a person who was in a car accident while she was on a route. She was awarded the Meritorious Citizenship Award.
On Sept. 20, a car careened out of control right in front of Beth during her afternoon route with several students on board. The driver of the car had a medical emergency and several other passers by stopped to assist. Beth called 911 and gave the others the fire extinguisher from the bus to break the car window so they could get into the vehicle. Beth stayed at the scene with 911 on the phone until first responders got there. Beth remained calm and kept the kids calm. She contacted the parents to assure them everyone was safe and they would be home as soon as they were released. Beth never left the bus, but was instrumental in saving this person's life.
Congratulations on your well-deserved honor, Beth!
